Gold is a wonderful substance. Gold is malleable enough to make into jewellery, conductive enough for use in electronics, rare enough to be quite valuable. A gold ring is seen as quite a lovely piece of jewelery - but there are down sides to using gold in a ring.

For one, not everyone reacts well to gold. For some people, gold can simply leave colored gold rings marks on their skin. Others are not so lucky. Gold allergies, while somewhat rare, can cause rashes and even blisters at the point of contact with gold. A more common allergy is to nickel, which is often used as an alloy in gold products. This means that a higher karat rating of gold is required, which contains less nickel. This, of course, means an elevated cost for your new gold jewellery.

Another reason not to use gold is it's susceptibility to damage. Gold is an incredibly soft metal, as is evidenced by the popularity of the "bite test" to show whether something is pure gold. Biting down on a gold item should leave small tooth marks in the surface. That level of malleability means that even a light bump into a solid object can warp or damage your gold rings, leaving them indian gold rings with large scars, scrapes or worse. Even with careful wearing, the heat of your fingers can cause the ring to change shape, molding itself around your finger and becoming slightly ovular in shape.

Gold is also hard to protect and maintain in good condition. Gold is susceptible to tarnish, and can be quite tricky to clean properly without damaging its soft surface. White gold is also difficult to maintain, as the rhodium coating easily wears down with regular use, and has to be re-applied on a near annual basis.

Gold is also still quite rare. It is estimated that if every ounce of gold ever used in the entire history of the world were melted down and made into a single piece, it would form a cube of merely 66 feet in height, length and depth. That sort of rarity means that prices for 22ct gold rings will always be rather high, and getting a new piece of gold will cost as much, if not more than another, newer metal that may not have some of the same drawbacks as gold.

When you consider all of these factors, a gold ring may not be the best choice for your next piece of jewellery. That doesn't mean you should dispose of any you currently have, of course - but you should be aware of other metals that rings can be made from, and make your selection wisely.
